این سخن نقل است زاسکندر که گفت
هرچه گیری معتدل باید گرفت

در میان رو نه بعز و نه بذل
زآنکه جزویست اعتدال از عقل کل

نه بنزدیک آی و نه میباش دور
در وسط رو تا بود خیر الامور

چون رسن رامعتدل افتاد تاب
گر بود صد رشته گردد یک طناب

ور دهی تابش ز اندازه بدر
بگسلد پیوند او از یکدگر

تو زخشک و تر نداری در جهان
جز سخن سرد و دل گرم این زمان

گرچه مردی سرد گوئی گرم دل
جهد کن تا بو که گردی معتدل

گر همی خواهی که گیرد کار نور
معتدل میباش در خیرالامور

کار چون بیش آید از قدر عقول
گر همه فضلی است پیش آرد فضول

طعمهٔ کان پاکبازان را دهند
هرگز آن کی نونیازان را دهند

English translation

This saying is recounted from Alexander, who said, Whatever you undertake, you must undertake it with moderation. Walk the middle path, neither with arrogance nor extravagance, For moderation is a part of the Universal Intellect. Do not come too near, and do not remain too far; Walk in the middle, that it may be the best of affairs. When a rope is twisted with moderation, Even if it has a hundred threads, it becomes one cord. And if you twist it beyond measure, Its threads will snap apart from one another. Of all that is dry and wet in the world, you possess Nothing but cold words and a warm heart at this time. Though you are a man of cold words and a warm heart, Strive so that you may perhaps become moderate. If you desire your affairs to be illuminated, Be moderate in the best of affairs. When an affair exceeds the capacity of intellects, Even if it is entirely a virtue, it brings about excess. The morsel that they give to the pure and selfless ones, When would they ever give that to the newly needy?
