بود جامی لعل در دست ایاس
قیمت او برتر از حد و قیاس

شاه گفتش بر زمین زن پیش خویش
بر زمین زد تا که شد صد پاره بیش

شور در خیل و سپاه افتاد ازو
کان همه کس را گناه افتاد ازو

هرکسش میگفت ای شوریده رای
قیمت این کس نداند جز خدای

تو چنین بشکستی آخر شرم دار
عزتش بردی و افکندیش خوار

شاه از آن حرکت تبسم مینمود
خویش را فارغ بمردم مینمود

آن یکی گفت این جهان افروز جام
از چه بشکستی چنین خوار ای غلام

گفت فرمان بردن این شه مرا
برتر از ماهی بود تا مه مرا

تو بسوی جام میکردی نگاه
لیک من از جان بسوی قول شاه

بنده آن بهتر که بر فرمان رود
جام چبود چون سخن درجان رود

بندهٔ او باش تا باشی کسی
ور سگ او باشی این باشد بسی

English translation

Ayaz had a ruby cup in his hand, Its value was beyond limit and measure. The king said to him, 'Smash it on the ground before you.' He threw it to the ground until it broke into more than a hundred pieces. An uproar broke out among the cavalry and army because of him, For they all considered what he did a sin. Everyone said to him, 'O you of deranged mind, No one knows the price of this but God! You broke it so? Have shame! You destroyed its honor and cast it down in disgrace.' The king was smiling at that action, Showing himself unconcerned with the people. One person said, 'This world-illuminating cup, Why did you break it so disgracefully, O slave?' He replied, 'Obeying the command of this king Is higher to me than from the fish to the moon. You were looking at the cup, But I, from my soul, at the king's word. The best servant is the one who follows commands; What is a cup when the word enters the soul? Be His servant so that you may be someone, Or if you are His dog, that is enough.'
