عهد پیشین را یکی استاد بود
چارصد صندوق علمش یاد بود

کار او جز علم و جز طاعت نبود
فارغ او زین هر دو یکساعت نبود

بود اندر عهد او پیغامبری
وحی حق بگشاد بر جانش دری

گفت با آن مرد گوی ای بی قرار
گرچه هستی روز وشب در علم وکار

چون تو دنیا دوستی حق ذرهٔ
از تو نپذیرد چه باشی غرهٔ

چون ز دل دنیات دور افکنده نیست
جای تو جز دوزخ سوزنده نیست

صد جهان با علم و با معنی بهم
دوزخ آرد بار با دنیا بهم

تا بود یک ذره دنیا دوستی
با تن دوزخ بهم هم پوستی

میروی در سرنگونساری که چه
دشمن مادوست میداری که چه

چند نازی زین سرای خاکسار
همچو مرداری و کرکس صد هزار

هست دنیا گنده پیری گوژپشت
صد هزاران شوی هر روزی بکشت

هر زمان گلگونهٔ دیگر کند
هر نفس آهنگ صد شوهر کند

از طلسم او نشد آگه کسی
در میان خاک و خون دارد بسی

English translation

In a bygone era, there was a master, Who had committed four hundred chests of knowledge to memory. His occupation was nothing but learning and obedience, Not for an hour was he free from these two. In his era, there was a prophet, To whose soul the revelation of Truth opened a door. (God) said to him: 'Tell that restless man, "Though you are engaged in knowledge and work day and night, Since you are a world-lover, Truth will not accept a speck From you, so why are you conceited? Since your world has not been cast out from your heart, Your place is nothing but the burning Hell. A hundred worlds of knowledge and meaning combined Will yield Hell together with the world. As long as there is a single speck of worldly love, You share a skin with the body of Hell. Why are you heading headlong into ruin? Why do you love Our enemy? How much will you boast of this lowly abode? It is like a carcass surrounded by a hundred thousand vultures. The world is a foul, hunchbacked old hag, Who has murdered hundreds of thousands of husbands every day. Every moment she applies a different rouge, Every breath she sets her sights on a hundred husbands. No one has become aware of her spell, Though she holds many in the midst of dirt and blood."'
