مرگ را مردی بجان مشتاق شد
پیش خواجه بوعلی دقاق شد

گفت من از دست شیطان رجیم
می ندارم ذرهٔ از مرگ بیم

هر دمم جان گوئیا شیطان برد
مرگ نیکوتر بود گر جان برد

خواجه گفت ای چاره خواه نیکبخت
در سرایت از میان بر کن درخت

تا برو گنجشگ ننشیند دگر
بی درختت دیو کی بیند دگر

تا درونت آشیان دیو هست
دایمت از دیو سر کالیو هست

چون بسوزی آشیان دیو پاک
دیو را با تو چه کار ای دردناک

English translation

A man became deeply eager for death with all his soul, He went before Master Bu 'Ali Daqqaq. He said, 'From the hands of the accursed Satan, I do not have a speck of fear of death. Every moment it is as if Satan takes my soul, Death would be better if he took my soul.' The Master said, 'O fortunate seeker of a remedy, Uproot the tree from the midst of your courtyard, So that the sparrow may no longer perch upon it, Without your tree, how will the demon see you again? As long as the demon's nest is within you, Your head will constantly be bewildered by the demon. When you completely burn away the demon's nest, What business will the demon have with you, O sorrowful one?'
