Section 2 - The Tale and the Parable

Original content

English translation

They were burying a man in the dust Hasan went to that grave in Basra He was looking towards that grave and tomb He was weeping over himself at the head of that grave Then he spoke thus: that it is a difficult matter That the grave is the final destination of this world And it is the first destination of that world The first and last are beneath the earth Why do you attach your heart to a world that is all illusion When its end is this, meaning the narrow grave Since you do not fear that terrifying world When its beginning is this, meaning under the dust How long of this, since the end will be this Woe to that whose beginning will be like this There is no person behind this veil For whom someone has not lamentably died If you wish to breathe a breath in the veil Breathe it with someone who has no dead Every lamp that has wind before it How can it take a free path forward Since you carry a head full of vain desires You are carrying a lamp on a path with a fierce gale Do you not fear that this quickly-dying lamp Dies quickly? If you can, make haste If this lamp of yours dies suddenly You will fall into a pit without finishing the path Take the path to its end before that, O thoughtless one That your lamp is extinguished by such a wind When your lamp dies, O unaware one Neither sign nor trace remains of it If you seek a dead lamp much No one will give a sign of it in the whole world Every lamp that a wind snatched away If you beat on your head much because of it, what is the use? No one is aware of a dead lamp When it dies, whether it exists or not When the lamp reached a placeless place When it returned there, it disappeared The path of the seer from this world to that world Is no more than a breath for the soul in between When that breath comes out from your inside This world of yours becomes that world From this world to that world is not much Except a breath, there is no wall in between When that breath of yours comes out from the pure soul It casts you upside-down into the dust Death is determined for the souls of creation It is necessary for everyone to sleep in the dust
