سالخورده پیر زالی تنگدست
کرده بودی پیش گورستان نشست

سال و ماهش خرقهٔ در پیش بود
صد هزاران بخیه بر وی بیش بود

هر دمش چون مردهٔ در میرسید
او بهر یک بخیهٔ بر میکشید

گر شدی یک مرده گر ده آشکار
او بهر یک بخیهٔ بردی بکار

چون همی افتاد مرگی هر زمان
خرقه شد در بخیه صد پاره نهان

عاقبت روزی بسی مرگ اوفتاد
پیره زن را کار از برگ اوفتاد

مرده آوردند بسیارش به پیش
در غلط افتاد زن در کار خویش

گشت عاجز برد در فریاد دست
رشته را بگسست و سوزن را شکست

گفت نیست این کار کار چون منی
تا کیم از رشتهٔ و سوزنی

نیزم از سوزن نباید دوختن
خرقه بر آتش بخواهم سوختن

این چنین کاری که هر ساعت مراست
کی شود از سوزن و از رشته راست

چون فلک میبایدم سرگشتهٔ
کاین نه کار سوزنست و رشتهٔ

چون تو دایم ماندهٔ بی عقل و هوش
در نیاری این سخن هرگز بگوش

زآنک اگر تو بشنوی زین یک سخن
در بر تو پیرهن گردد کفن

English translation

An aged, destitute old woman Had taken her seat before the graveyard. For months and years, she had a cloak before her, Upon which there were more than a hundred thousand stitches. At every moment, when a corpse arrived, She would pull a stitch for each one. Whether one corpse appeared or ten, She would put a stitch to work for each. Since death occurred at every moment, The cloak became hidden in a hundred patches in stitches. Eventually, one day, many deaths occurred, The old woman's work fell into disarray. They brought many corpses before her, The woman fell into error in her work. She became helpless and raised her hands in outcry, She snapped the thread and broke the needle. She said, "This work is not for someone like me, How long must I suffer from thread and needle? I must no longer sew with a needle, I want to burn the cloak in the fire. Such work that comes upon me every hour, How can it be set right by needle and thread? I need a spinning force like the heavens, For this is not the work of needle and thread." Since you continually remain without reason and sense, You never bring these words to your ears. Because if you were to hear this one word, The shirt on your body would turn into a shroud.
