در رهی میرفت هارون گرمگاه
دید میلی سر بر آورده براه

کرد هارون قصد میل سایه دار
گشت بهلول از دگر سوی آشکار

گفت بفکن طمطراق ای پرهوس
چون ز دنیا سایهٔ میلیت بس

سوی باغ و منظر و ایوان و خیل
چیست ان یکفیک ظل المیل میل

چون فراسر میشود در سایهٔ
پس بود بسیار اندک مایهٔ

دنیی دون چون نهنگی سرکشید
نیک و بد را تا بگردن درکشید

جمله را تا حشر بر پیچید دست
هیچکس از دام مکر او نجست

جملهٔ شیران بزنجیر ویند
زیر دست حکم و تسخیر ویند

گر ز بی مغزی تو دنیا دوستی
چون پیازی پای تا سر پوستی

English translation

Harun was walking on a road during the midday heat He saw a pillar rearing its head on the way Harun headed for the shady pillar Bahlool appeared from the other direction He said, "Cast away this pomp, oh full of desires, Since from this world, the shadow of a pillar is enough for you. Towards gardens, belvederes, palaces, and retinues, Why is there an inclination, if the shadow of a pillar suffices you? Since one eventually ends up in a shadow, Then one must be of very little substance. The base world reared its head like a leviathan, It dragged down both the good and the bad up to their necks. It bound the hands of everyone until Resurrection day, No one has escaped the trap of its deceit. All the lions are in its chains, Under the sway of its command and subjugation. If out of foolishness you are a lover of the world, Like an onion, you are skin from head to toe."
