Section 1 - The Twelfth Discourse

Original content

English translation

The seeker came with two blood-scattering eyes Like the earth, he fell before the sky He said, O one who has come as the Sultan of the world From head to foot you have become the arch and canopy All are lost in you, you are above all All are like a drop, you are the ocean of all You are both strong-hearted and of high aspiration You are the benefactor of the people of the world No one has opened their eyes as much as you Who has turned front and back as much as you? You have revolved with thousands of eyes Inevitably, you are constantly a master of vision What is the purpose of all this turning of yours? Why is your constant coming and going restricted? How long will you be bewildered, O sky? How long will you revolve bathed in twilight? Although you have revolved constantly and much You have not become fully satiated with your wandering How long will you come from above to below? You do not grow tired of this coming and going Every night they bring you like a raven's wing From the stars they bring you so many lamps Inform me of what you are seeking Take my hand and make me your companion I am bewildered like you, bear with me Draw back the veil from the face of this purpose When the sky heard this, it said, O restless one All this has nothing to do with me You think that I have caught a scent No, I am veiled from head to foot From the desire for this, I have neither head nor foot I do not have a moment of rest anywhere By day I am in a blue smoke, blameless The whole night I remain in black water From this seeking, I constantly revolve in blood If you don't believe it, look at the twilight, and that is all Day and night my head revolves like a ring Until it says I am within the heart Like a ball trapped in a polo stick like this How long will I be bewildered like this? My ring is lost, my head and foot Inevitably I have remained at the door like a ring Moment by moment the hand of destiny drives me Taking me by the ear and turning me around That which is a sky full of stars every night This is not a sky, it is a basin of embers When it makes a garment of tar upon my breast It scatters the basin of embers upon my head How long, like restless Sufis Will I whirl in this field of action? How long to hold bewilderment as a religion To have a garment on the arch for the sake of this? I have revolved for centuries, up and down Eventually, having folded it up, I will remain still Even if you sit before me a lot, O seeker I am more bewildered than you in this path The seeker came before the elder master Told him of his state, what had befallen him The master told him the sky is bewildered And bathed in the blood of the heart from the twilight Even if its mill were to break Bewilderment does not have a firm foundation
