سالک آمد پیش حیوان دردناک
نه امید امن ونه بیم هلاک

طالب اوحی شده دل پر شعاع
سبع هشتم باز میجست از سباع

گفت ای جویندگان راهبر
در رکوع استاده جمله کارگر

از چرا و چند معزول آمده
در چرای خویش مشغول آمده

در زمین گاو سیاهی از شماست
زیر بار گاو ماهی از شماست

بر فلکتان گاو و ماهی نیز هست
دب و شیر و هرچه خواهی نیز هست

زیر و بالا سر بسر بگرفته اید
کوه و صحرا خشک و تر بگرفته اید

گه شما را نیز ظاهر یک خلف
ناقة الله بس بود در پیش صف

خود مپرسید از سگ اصحاب کهف
زانکه جانی دارد او بر عشق وقف

از شما پیغامبری را اینت نام
گوسفندی میشود قایم مقام

وز شما یک ماهی پاکیزه جای
یونسی را میشود خلوت سرای

وز شما بزغالهٔ بریان به زهر
میکند آگاه احمد را ز قهر

شاخ دولت از شما بر میدهد
مشک آهو گاو عنبر میدهد

چون کسی در راه دولت یار گشت
دیگری را هم تواند یار گشت

هست روی دولت از سوی شما
دولتی میخواهم از کوی شما

چون شنید این حال مشکل جانور
شد زخود زین حال حالی بیخبر

گفت ای هم بی خبر هم بی ادب
کس ز گاو و خر گهر دارد طلب

ما همه دزد ره یکدیگریم
یکدگر را میکشیم و میخوریم

سر بعالم در نهاده بیقرار
نیست ما را جز خور و جز خفت کار

آنچه میجوئی تو اینجا آن مجوی
گوهر دریائی از صحرا مجوی

صد هزار از ما بمیرد زار بار
تا شود یک ره براقی آشکار

گر بلندی یافتست از ما کسی
حکم نتوان کرد بر نادر بسی

از خر و از گاو نتوان یافت راز
پس سر خود گیر زود ای سرفراز

سالک آمد پیش پیر بخردان
قصهٔ بر گفتش از خیل ددان

پیر گفتش هست حیوان و سباع
ز آتش نفس مجوسی یک شعاع

نفس کافر سرکشی دارد مدام
گر سر اندازیش سر بنهد تمام

گه مسلمانی دهی گه زر دهی
تا که یک لقمه بدین کافر دهی

گر طعام نفس خوش گر ناخوشست
چون گذر بر نفس دارد آتشست

خوش مده نفس مجوسی را طعام
تا نبینی ناخوشی او تمام

English translation

The seeker came before the pained animals With neither hope of safety nor fear of ruin Seeking revelation, his heart full of radiance Searching for the eighth beast among the predators He said, 'O seekers of the guide Standing in bowing prayer, all workers Dismissed from why and how much Occupied in your own grazing On the earth is a black cow from among you Bearing the burden is a cow-fish from among you In your sky there is a bull and a fish too A bear and a lion and whatever you wish is there too You have entirely taken up the below and above You have occupied mountain and desert, dry and wet Sometimes a manifest successor for you The She-camel of God was sufficient before the rank Do not even ask about the dog of the Companions of the Cave For he has dedicated his soul to love From among you, for a prophet, such a name A sheep becomes the substitute And from among you, a pure-placed fish Becomes a secluded abode for Jonah And from among you, a roasted kid with poison Makes Ahmad aware of wrath The branch of fortune bears fruit from you The deer gives musk, the cow gives ambergris Since one became a friend on the path of fortune Another can also become a friend The face of fortune is from your direction I seek a fortune from your street.' When the animal heard this difficult state It became instantly unaware of itself from this state It said, 'O you, both unaware and ill-mannered! Does anyone seek a jewel from a cow and a donkey? We are all highway robbers of one another We kill and eat each other Having set our heads upon the world restlessly We have no business but eating and sleeping Do not seek here what you are seeking Do not seek a sea pearl from the desert A hundred thousand of us miserably die repeatedly So that once a Buraq may become manifest If anyone of us has found exaltation One cannot make a rule based on the rare From a donkey and a cow one cannot find the secret So go your own way quickly, O exalted one.' The seeker came to the elder of the wise And told him the tale of the horde of beasts The elder told him, 'The animal and the beast Are a single ray from the fire of the Magian ego The infidel ego always possesses rebelliousness If you throw away its head, it will completely submit Sometimes you give your faith, sometimes you give gold Just to give a single morsel to this infidel Whether the food of the ego is pleasant or unpleasant Since it passes to the ego, it is fire Do not pleasantly feed the Magian ego Lest you completely see its unpleasantness.'
