Section 1 - The Twenty-Fourth Discourse

Original content

English translation

The flying seeker went before the birds, He said, "O birds of fire and light, O you who have leaped out of the snare full of affliction, All drawn up in ranks in the atmosphere of the sky! Both the language of birds is in your city, And melody and light are for your sake. You have flown from the attribute-less nest, You have wandered in the world of gnosis. You have both broken the cage with wing and feather, And leaped out from the snare and the bond. From among you, the hoopoe became the guide of the work, The confidant of the owner of the ring. This is enough for you that the hoopoe has found this, And has found favor from such a king. At night you desire the basin of the Pleiades, Until dawn you lay golden eggs. O all you who have hastened without intermediary, Having found grain from 'they leave hungry in the morning'. Under the shadow from your west to east, The shadow of the Simurgh is upon your heads. Since you have the companionship of the Simurgh, Whatever I want is available, even to bird's milk. I am an infant on the path, provide a remedy of milk, I am dying thirsty, devise a plan!" When the birds of the garden heard these words, The world became to their eyes like a crow's feather. The bird said, "O ignorant of my state, My wings and feathers burned from this affliction. From this sorrow I am stuck in blood and mud, Left like a half-slaughtered bird. I have traversed the entire world on the wing, I have stained my feathers and beak with blood. From day to night I have made this quest, I have bid farewell to sleep at night. Ultimately, like you, I am left bewildered, I have shed my wings and feathers from this search. Our lover bird is the nightingale, And it has no portion but melodies. If it is the Huma, it eats a bone, So that a king consumes a world from it. Do not look at the peacock's display, look at this, That it bows its head for a single raisin. The hoopoe too harbors things in its head, There is something in its head that it raises. Since the ostrich saw the Simurgh from us, Inevitably it chose seclusion out of shame for us. If you fly with our wings, You will shed your feathers and disgrace yourself." The seeker came before the peerless Pir, Immediately gave an account, weeping like a low string. The Pir told him, "The bird is, due to utter perfection, The symbol of all celestial meanings. A meaning that originates from goodness, Its form in the hereafter will be a bird. The essence of the soul has many meanings, But there is work until it becomes realized by you. Every meaning that is in your soul, As long as it does not join the body, it is hidden. When it joins the body, it is specifically yours, It is not specifically yours if it is only in your soul. If the fortune of religion becomes available to you, The currency of the soul will become equal with the body."
