Section 8 - On the Perfection of Intellect

Original content

English translation

Its four humors are disciples, and it is the master; Its ten senses are the army, and it is the commander. Wash the color of conceit from the tablet of greed, With the water of humility and neediness. For in the shadow of the religious law, The foundation of religion for the sake of the branch, Gave you substance for your temporary stay, Three strong faculties and fourfold colors. When the soul arrives in the world of delay, It feels ashamed of these very colors. In pursuit of the soul's safety, Do not drive the horse of the soul into this ocean. He who is possessed of mind and intelligence knows, That safety lies on the shore of the sea. Your hands and feet, by the decree of fate, Are bound within this transient space. So, with hands and feet tied by Him, Do not seek the sea's surface on the back of a gourd. If you do not know how to swim, Why drive your donkey into the ocean? And if you do not know swimming, listen: Do not blindly climb the minaret in vain. Even if you are a master of swimming, Before me, you are still standing as an apprentice. Is it not so that when the ship wrecks, O vain one, Swimming becomes a burden in the sea? Except through the perfection of reason and intellect, Who would buy three yards of satin for nine dirhams? To the heart that is a mine of wisdom, All the good of the heavens is entirely bad. In the heart and soul of the one who is vigilant, Upon the head and eyes of the one who is awake, There is a sturdy bridge over the pure water; Once you have crossed it, what matters the bridge or the valley?
