Section 1 - The Ninth Discourse

English translation

The Seeker arrived, and then, making his head his feet, Like a pen, he bowed headlong before the Pen. He said, 'O you who have come as the secretary of secrets, Who have come as the assayer of speech and action! O you who in childhood were like Jesus, Both honored, firm, and eloquent. You are the bowstring to the bow of power, inevitably, For this reason, Nun and the Pen was revealed. God Exalted also gave you instruction, And from His power gave you the best of forms. The first master of the secrets of eternity, You came into existence from the void of non-existence. Making feet out of your head, making a head out of your tongue, You stride forth, scattering jewels of blackness. Sometimes you scatter pearls, sometimes sugar, Sometimes your writing is of pearls, sometimes of liquid gold. In your darkness is the Water of Life, You are the sugarcane of Truth, indeed, the candy. You are an absolute king, Your decree has all become manifest truth. In reality, without metaphor, flaw, or doubt, The inspirer of the tablet of the heart, the painter of the Unseen. See my pain, open a door for me, Tell the secret of my Unseen, and nod a head.' From these words, the soul of the Pen was heated, It split open from the sword of the tongue. It said, 'After all, who am I for secrets? With a severed head, I run in this affair. Even if a water is clear and perfect, Since the spout does not know it, it is unaware. I am like the spout and the clear water flows, But I am far from what flows upon me. I came with my waist bound for the vision, I came headlong out of yearning for this work. Then, having made my tongue a pen, without face or path, I go, and then into the black water. Since I did not recognize a speck of this secret, In the end, out of helplessness, I lost my head. Hear the pleasant explanation of my state, Believe me and hear my screeching. Either, like me, bewildered, take your own path, Or draw a pen through me and go your way.' The Seeker came before the Pir and told his state, So that that Imam of spiritual state and speech became aware. The Pir told him, 'The Pen in the Divine Presence is The decree of Power, the allotter of work, more or less. If an atom has dealings with an atom, The point of that Pen knows how to paint its design. Until a design from the Pen becomes manifest, Not a speck moves by itself in the world. When the calling to move arose for the Pen, Things became right through its movement. It chose to be headlong forever, It does not rest for a moment from the pain of the work. When it reached pleasure after pain, It drowned in that Light: The Pen has dried. Whoever went forth with much striving in the work, In the end, he departed with good deeds. Like the pen, be straight in your conduct, So that you may reach your desire in your work.'
