عاشقی می مرد چون دل زنده داشت
لاجرم چون گل لبی پرخنده داشت

سایلی گفتش که این خنده ز چیست ؟
خاصه در وقتی که می باید گریست ؟

گفت با معشوق خود چون عاشقم
می زنم یک دم که صبحی صادقم

صبح را خنده صواب آید صواب
کاو درون سینه دارد آفتاب

گرچه من خورشید دارم در میان
بر طبق ننهاده ام چون آسمان

آفتابی هر که را در جان بود
گر بخندد همچو صبح آسان بود

من که روزم آمد و شب در گذشت
یارم آمد رب و یارب درگذشت

گر کنم شادی و گر خندم ، رواست
گر گشایم لب و گر بندم ، رواست

چون شود خورشید عزت آشکار
هشت جنت گردد آنجا ذره وار

بی جهت چندانکه بینی پیش و پس
از همه سویی یکی بینی و بس

جمله او بینی چو دایم جمله اوست
نیست در هر دو جهان بیرون ز دوست

English translation

A lover was dying; since he possessed a living heart, Inevitably, like a rose, he had lips full of smiles. A questioner asked him, 'What is this laughter for? Especially at a time when one should weep?' He replied, 'Because I am a lover with my Beloved, I take a breath, for I am a true dawn. Laughter is fitting, indeed fitting for the dawn, For it holds the sun within its breast. Although I hold a sun within me, I have not placed it on a tray like the sky. Whoever has a sun in their soul, If they laugh like the dawn, it is effortless. I, whose day has arrived and night has passed, My Friend has arrived, and my cries of Lord, oh Lord have ceased. If I rejoice and if I laugh, it is allowed; If I open my lips and if I close them, it is allowed. When the sun of glory becomes manifest, The eight paradises become like a speck there. Directionless, however much you look forward and backward, From every direction, you see only One and nothing else. You see all as Him, for He is constantly the all; There is nothing in both worlds outside of the Friend.'
