پیش شیخی رفت مردی نامدار
از سر بی خویشئی بگریست زار

گفت سیرم از عبودیت همی
وز ربوبیت بمن نرسد دمی

مانده ام بی این و بی آن من مدام
چون کنم گفتا که سر می زن مدام

این سخن را گر محل آید پدید
از سر علم و عمل آید پدید

چشم باید داشت بر لوح ازل
چند دارم چشم بر علم و عمل

English translation

A renowned man went to a Sheikh, Crying bitterly in a state of selflessness. He said, 'I am entirely weary of servitude, And from Lordship, not a breath reaches me. I am left constantly without this and without that, What should I do?' He said, 'Keep striking your head constantly. If a place for these words appears, It appears through knowledge and action. One must keep their eyes on the Tablet of Eternity, How long should I keep my eyes on knowledge and action?'
