سائلی جویندهٔ راه کمال
کرد او از شیخ گرگانی سؤال

گفت چون نبود ترا میل سماع
گفت ما را از سماع است انقطاع

زانکه هست اندر دلم یک نوحه گر
کو زمانی گر ز دل آید به در

جملهٔ ذرات عرش و فرش پاک
نوحه گر گردند دایم یا هلاک

گر شود ظاهر چنین دردی که هست
تا ابد باید در آن ماتم نشست

با چنین دردی که درجان منست
کی سماع و رقص درمان منست

گر نیارم درد خویش امروز گفت
قصهٔ این غصه و این سوز گفت

تن زنم تا بوکه مرگم در رسد
ره بسوی روز برگم در رسد

English translation

A seeker searching for the path of perfection, Asked a question of the Sheikh of Gorgan. He said, 'Why do you have no inclination for sama (spiritual dance)?' He replied, 'We are severed from sama, Because there is a mourner within my heart, Who, if he were to emerge from the heart for a moment, All the atoms of the pure divine throne and the earth, Would become mourners forever or perish. If such a pain that exists becomes manifest, One must sit in mourning for it until eternity. With such a pain that is in my soul, How can sama and dancing be my remedy? If I cannot speak of my pain today, And tell the tale of this sorrow and this burning, I will remain silent until perhaps my death arrives, And the path to the day of my provision arrives.'
