عاشقی میرفت سوی حج مگر
شد بر معشوق بر عزم سفر

گفت اینک در سفر افتاده ام
هرچه فرمائی بجان استاده ام

در زمان معشوق آن مرد نژند
نیم خشتی سخت در عاشق فکند

همچو دریش از زمین برداشت مرد
بوسه بر داد و درو سوراخ کرد

پس بگردن درفکند آن را بناز
مینکرد از خویشتن یک لحظه باز

هرکه زو پرسید کاین چیست ای عزیز
گفت ازین بیشم چه خواهد بود نیز

در همه عالم بدین گیرم قرار
کاینم از معشوق آمد یادگار

هرکرا بوئی رسد از سوی او
هر دو عالم چیست خاک کوی او

گر ازو راهی بود سوی تو باز
تو ازین دولت توانی کرد ناز

گر ترا آن راه گردد آشکار
هرچه تو گوئی بود از عین کار

English translation

A lover was going to perform the Hajj pilgrimage; He went to the beloved with the intention of the journey. He said, 'Behold, I am now embarking on the journey; Whatever you command, I stand ready with my soul.' At that moment, the beloved of that sorrowful man Threw a hard half-brick at the lover. The man picked it up from the ground like a pearl, Kissed it, and made a hole in it. Then he hung it around his neck with grace, And did not separate it from himself for a single moment. Whoever asked him, 'What is this, O dear one?' He said, 'What could be more precious to me than this? In the whole world, I find peace in this, For this came to me as a keepsake from the beloved. Whoever receives a scent from their direction, What are both worlds? Just dust of their lane. If there is a way from them back to you, You can pride yourself on this fortune. If that path becomes manifest to you, Whatever you say will be the very essence of the task.'
