در رهی میرفت شبلی دردناک
دید دو کودک در افتاده بخاک

زانکه جوزی در میان افتاده بود
هر دو را دعوی آن افتاده بود

هر دو از یک جوز میکردند جنگ
شیخ گفتا کرد میباید درنگ

تا من این جوز محقر بشکنم
پس میان هر دو تن قسمت کنم

جوز بشکست و تهی آمد میانش
برگسست آنجایگه آهی ز جانش

گشت بیمغزی خویشش آشکار
اشک میبارید و میشد بیقرار

هاتفی گفتش که ای شوریده جان
گر تو قسامی هلا قسمت کن آن

چو نهٔ صاحب نظر خامی مکن
بعد از این دعوی قسامی مکن

English translation

Shibli was walking on a path, sorrowful, He saw two children fallen in the dust. Because a walnut had fallen between them, Both of them laid claim to it. Both were fighting over a single walnut, The Shaykh said, 'You must pause, So that I may break this insignificant walnut, And then divide it between the two of you.' He broke the walnut, and its inside was empty, Right there, a sigh broke forth from his soul. His own lack of substance became apparent to him, He wept tears and became restless. A hidden voice said to him, 'O frenzied soul, If you are the divider, come now, divide it! Since you do not possess insight, do not act immaturely, After this, make no claim to being a divider.'
