Section 3 - The Tale and the Parable

Original content

English translation

With a wise, night-traveling companion, A thief went into a house in the middle of the night. Suddenly, he said to his friend: 'Quickly, Step out of this house like smoke!' The friend asked him: 'What is the matter after all? No one is awake; whom are you avoiding?' He said: 'I was searching to see if there was anything, And a piece of bread happened to come into my hand. Forgetfully, I put it in my mouth; As soon as I ate it, I immediately remembered, That after all, bread and salt have been eaten here; If you harbor ill intentions, you will be rejected by heaven.' The perfect ones have suffered greatly on their path; They have practiced servitude and fulfillment of duty. Inevitably, they became rulers through servitude; They became the best of the world's creation. Servitude, a well, and imprisonment are also needed, So that you may become honored in Egypt like Joseph. If you are like Ja'far, be truthful; And if you are like the beloved, be a lover. Be like Hasan in both knowledge and action, So that you too may be counted among the beautiful. Play less; how long will you play with dice, So that you may tackle difficult tasks like Ka'b? If you are like Rabi', it is not strange; Since the autumn of the self is gone, here is spring. Become mute like Habib, far from others, So that you may be named Beloved by the Jealous God. If you become aware of God like Ma'ruf, You will soon become both well-known and a mystic. If you desire to be like Ibrahim [ibn] Adham, The white horse of piety must be assured to you. If you desire a lamp in your heart like Thawri, Cast out the sign of Taurus from your mind. If you desire to be like Tawus al-Yamani, You must have the peacock feathers of spiritual meanings. If you desire a station like Fath, Work so that you may see victory, and peace be upon you. If you want to be easy on yourself, be worthy; Since religion is easy, be like Sahl. If you have a head in religion, Abandon this headship like Sari. And if you have a burning passion like the King of Kerman, Then you are the king of Kerman and Nimruz. And if you consider everything as a gift rather than acquisition and reward, Then you are Abu'l-Fadl and Ibn Ata. And if you desire perfection and the purity of light, You must stay away from dark gold. Whoever is the owner of coins, Will not be a master of the work like Malik [ibn] Dinar. When you cease to exist and yet remain through all this, If you do not know, you will know all of this. Once you know, do not act out of ignorance; As much as you can, do not do whatever you are capable of doing. Adopt kindness, compassion, and gentleness; Take the path for your own rectification. If they give you even an atom of compassion in your soul, They will grant you the high station of the family of Imran.
