رفت با بهلول هارون الرشید
سوی گورستان بر خاکی رسید

کله ای دیدند خشک آن کسی
مرغ در وی خانه بنهاده بسی

کرد هارونش ازان کله سؤال
گفت بهلولش که پنهان نیست حال

بوده است این مرد سر انداخته
در کبوتر باختن جان باخته

مرد چون در دوستی این بمرد
چون بشد با خویشتن هم این ببرد

چون نرفته ست این هوس از سر برونش
بیضهٔ مرغ است در کله کنونش

هم دماغش بر کبوتر بازی است
خاک گشته همچنان در بازی است

از هوس گر کله خاکستر شود
می ندانم تا هنوز از سر شود !

هرچه در دنیا خیالت آن بود
تا ابد راه وصالت آن بود

کار بر خود از امل کردی دراز
بند کن پیش از اجل از خویش باز

ورنه در مردن نه آسان باشدت
هر نفس مرگی دگر سان باشدت

جمله در باز و فرو کن پای راست
گر کفن را هیچ نگذاری رواست

English translation

Harun al-Rashid went with Bahlool Towards the graveyard, and reached a dusty spot. They saw someone's dry skull, In which a bird had built a sizable nest. Harun asked him about that skull. Bahlool told him that the situation is not hidden: "This man, who had devoted his head, Lost his life playing with pigeons. Since the man died in his love for this, When he passed away, he took this with himself. Because this desire has not gone out of his head, There are now bird eggs inside his skull. His brain is still set on pigeon playing, Even turned to dust, he is still playing. If the skull turns to ashes out of desire, I do not know if it will ever leave his head! Whatever your imagination was focused on in the world, That will be your path of connection for eternity. You have made your work long through false hope, Stop it before death comes upon you. Otherwise, dying will not be easy for you, Every breath will be another kind of death for you. Give up everything entirely and set your foot right, If you leave nothing for the shroud, it is acceptable."
