باغبانی سه خیار آورد خرد
تحفه را پیش نظام الملک برد

خورد یک نوباوه را حالی نظام
پس دوم خورد و سوم هم شد تمام

بودش از هر سوی بسیار از کبار
او نداد البته کس را زان خیار

باغبان راداد سی دینار زر
مرد خدمت کرد و بیرون شد بدر

پس زفان بگشاد در مجمع نظام
گفت خوردم این سه نوباوه تمام

پس ندادم هیچکس را از کبار
زانکه هر سه تلخ افتاد آن خیار

میبترسیدم که گر گوید کسی
آن جگر خسته برنجد زان بسی

خوردم آن تنها و برخویش آمدم
یک زمان من نیز درویش آمدم

پیشوایانی که سر افراشتند
پیش ازین یارب چه رحمت داشتند

English translation

A gardener brought three small cucumbers He brought the gift before Nizam al-Mulk Nizam immediately ate one of the early fruits Then he ate the second, and the third was also finished There were many great nobles around him on every side He did not give any of those cucumbers to anyone, of course He gave the gardener thirty gold dinars The man offered his respects and went out the door Then Nizam opened his mouth in the assembly He said, I completely ate these three early fruits And I did not give any to the great nobles Because all three of those cucumbers turned out to be bitter I feared that if someone were to say so That weary-hearted one would be greatly offended by it I ate them alone and took it upon myself For a moment, I too became a dervish The leaders who raised their heads high O Lord, what mercy they used to have before this!
