Section 5 - The Tale and the Parable

Original content

English translation

That heedless one went forth to the mosque; Before anyone could draw a breath, he finished his prayer. He performed neither a proper prostration nor a bowing; He intended to make his return from the mosque. There was an intoxicated madman in the mosque, With a tumultuous heart and a stone in his hand. He said to the man, 'Beware, O trickster! Tell me, for whom did you perform this prayer here?' That lazy one in his prayer said, 'This prayer, I performed for the sake of the Self-Sufficient God.' The madman said, 'I am saying this for that reason, And I am seeking this sign from you for that reason, That if you had performed this prayer for the sake of God, You would have surely received this stone of mine upon your head!' The man said, 'The day was very late, Because of that, my prayer was so short.' [The madman said,] 'You have not a speck of awareness of yourself, You are your own enemy, what do you seek from yourself? The death of people cannot be blamed on destiny, This action can only be blamed on false hope. Since false hope is great and life is short, If much is reduced to little, what is the harm? A week remains, and the rest of life is gone, What will you do with this one week of life? In such a life, which is no more than a flash of lightning, Whether you laugh or cry, there is no difference. When life passes, even if you were a lion, You would be brought down by a single hair.'
