گفت اندر پیش افلاطون کسی
کان فلانی حمد میگفتت بسی

در هنر بستود بسیاری ترا
تا فلک بنهاد مقداری ترا

زان سخن بگریست افلاطون بدرد
روی آورد از سر دردی بمرد

گفت میگریم که در دل مشکلیست
تا چه کردم کان پسند جاهلیست

هرچه باشد مرد نادان را پسند
مرد دانا را بود آن تخته بند

می ندانم تا پسند او چه بود
تا ازآن توبه کنم در حال زود

یک ستایش کان ز جاهل آیدم
صد عقوبت دان که حاصل آیدم

گر مرا اهل دلی تحسین کند
جملهٔ شعرم دل او دین کند

گر ستایش گوی من صد کس بود
ذوق یک صاحبدلم می بس بود

نی کیم من اهل دین را چند ازین
نفس تا کی داردم دربند ازین

ای دریغا هرچه گفتم هیچ بود
دیده کور و راه پیچاپیچ بود

گر دمی بودی سخن پذرفتنم
نیستی پروای چندین گفتنم

گر بحضرت ره گشادن دارمی
کی دل برهم نهادن دارمی

English translation

Someone said in the presence of Plato, 'So-and-so was praising you a great deal. He praised you greatly for your virtue and wisdom, so much that heaven elevated your worth.' At those words, Plato wept in pain; he turned his face away and sighed in agony. He said, 'I weep because there is a distress in my heart; what did I commit that was pleasing to an ignorant man? Whatever is pleasing to an ignorant person is a shackle and confinement for a wise man. I do not know what it was of mine that pleased him, so that I might immediately repent of it. A single praise that comes to me from an ignorant person brings a hundred punishments upon me. But if an enlightened soul (a person of heart) praises me, his heart will make my entire poetry its faith. Even if there were a hundred people praising me, the delight of a single person of heart is sufficient for me. Nay, who am I? Why speak of the people of religion? How long will my ego hold me captive to this? Alas, whatever I said was nothing; the eye was blind and the path was winding. If I had been capable of receiving the Word for even a moment, I would not have cared to speak so much. If I had found a way to open a path to the Divine Presence, how could I have set my heart on composing these words?'
