Section 1 - The Thirty-Sixth Discourse

Original content

English translation

A seeker whose wet nurse was the mysteries of holiness, Came before Sense, which was the first stage. He said, 'O you whose name is the spy of the outward, Towards the inward you are always at peace. Five turns (the five senses) in the whole world belong to you, The six directions are also under your command. From foot to crown, your essence is ego (I-ness), Outside of ego is the safety of your essence. Wherever existence is, there is your essence; Non-existence is beyond your sensible things. Because ego did not show itself truly in nearness, Inevitably, ego arose in you from distance. Because much distance lay before you, Your thirst was greater than all. You are the nurse of the intellect, and the intellect, a master of affairs, Is but a suckling babe at your breast. I continually see you in transmission, I see you scattering offerings to the intellect. Until you arrange affairs in the outward, The intellect does not become a confidant of secrets in the inward. When the intellect became a keeper of secrets through wisdom, It must return before your threshold. So that you may give me awareness of the secret, And bestow the robe of kingship in my beggary.' When Sense heard these words, it became dejected, The candle of its five perceptions died of grief. It said, 'Since the very core of ego is my essence, Polytheism and heresy are among my additions (attributes). When will the pure wine of monism (Tawhid) reach me? If it does, only a scent of imitation reaches me. A hundred thousand branches spring from my every side, How can I have but one Qibla and one face? When will there be a severing from my multiplicity, While I am bound up to the neck in numbers (plurality)? I have not a particle of awareness of meaning, I have nothing but outward life and the world. He whose life is in the outward, It is rare if he catches a scent of the inward. Since I have no scent of the secret of meaning, I have accustomed myself to the form of numbers. Since I have no scent from the musk of meaning, The polytheistic Sense is not worthy of this path. How can the deficient Sense grant perfection to anyone? If you have no choice, it is but playing with imagination.' The seeker came before the elder of sea and land, And gave a reliable account of his state. The elder told him, 'Sense is ego within ego, Its path lies upon the valley of insecurity. It is a world full of dispersion from front and back, It does not grant a particle of unity to anyone. Break the habit of dispersion, O son, Lest your Sufi cloak become a rag of deception. Recognize eternal fortune as unity (collectedness of the heart), Whatever you recognize, recognize it with this intention. As long as ego holds you captive, The wind of your pride keeps you headlong. As long as you come drunk with sleep from conceit, Dust is the only proper answer to the wind of your pride.'
