Section 1 - The Thirty-Seventh Discourse
Original content
English translation
The fire-hearted, distraught Wayfarer, Went beyond the realm of sense, before Imagination. He said, 'O you who are essentially one entity, The five senses have become your stations. You are one, and all things pure and impure, You perceive just like the five senses. Smell, taste, touch, along with hearing and sight, Have made you a single tablet, the essence of forms. Whatever was needed through five external instruments, You grasped within using a single instrument. When you were slightly removed from multiplicity, The five perceivers came to you in cash from the One. When you became temporal and spatial, Five paths opened in your detailed knowledge. Although the five senses were apparent to you, Your perceiver of all five became the five friends. Since you could not see all five at once, Your essence suffered much pain from time. And oh wonder! From the five strong perceptions, A form remained from the spiritual time. When you came closer to unity, Your path was narrower than the senses. So, draw me out of multiplicity towards unity, Show me the way and make my heart joyous. So that I may emerge from so much separation, And throw the cloak of deception into the fire. I will bring my head to the valley of love, I will bring a path in this exile to proximity.' From these words, Imagination became like an illusion, Its state was altered instantly by this impossibility. It said, 'I have fallen far from this cash, I am forsaken from what you are seeking. Since the address comes to me in a dream, How can I see wakefulness in a dream? No form, no meaning, no action, Is apparent to me except behind a veil. One who is crying out from behind a veil, How can they grant another a path through the veil? Nothing is resolved by me in any state, I am Imagination, how long will you measure imagination? If you are a seeker, move on from here, Step past the senses and make your way to the intellect.' The Wayfarer came before the kind Elder, And laid his state bare before him. The Elder told him, 'Imagination is a registry, Full of troops of examples from sense and intellect. Wherever a form brings forth beauty, An example of it appears in imagination. The portion of sense is separation, but Imagination, Holds the cash of union with the whole world. Whatever it wants is entirely before it, And such a union is also from itself. Sense has fallen so oddly into distance, That from the cash of union it sees a hundred separations. Before it has taken a single step in its union, A hundred separations come before it from every side.'
