Section 1 - The Thirty-Eighth Discourse

English translation
The seeker, having passed the host of imagination, Arrived before the Intellect, having escaped from fetters. He said, 'O minister of the binding and loosing of the realm, The coin of the realm is never current without you. The cloak of religious duty is tailored to your stature, Your frontier extends to the boundary of non-existence. If you have grasped a single atom of non-existence, You have not accepted a single atom of religious duty. "Advance" and "retreat" is an address specifically for you, Sometimes you are in captivity, and sometimes in liberation. When your eye is opened in non-existence, "Advance" turns you away from yourself, entirely cleansed. When you become perceptive in the essence of existence, "Retreat" places you in another fetter at every moment. Whatever you possess of deficiency and perfection, Sense has bestowed upon you through the path of imagination. The sense of number came into form within number, Then imagination became number within the One. You were the One, giving meaning to number, Strongly distant from time and from space. Through five times, imagination made the five perceived things Into a hundred thousand perceptions for you in a single breath. You are the knower of everything in a single breath, Though you are a student, calling upon yourself. Although sense happened to be the first teacher, From that teacher, a higher work befell you. Sense in meaning, in truth, arose from you, But it set the work of your form right. Since you brought it to life in attribute, It gave a hundred kinds of knowledge in your form. Since you have a hand in giving life, This deadness is continuous in my heart. Give me life, and bring me to my goal, In servitude, bring me to my worshipped one.' The Intellect said to him, 'You have no intellect at all, You do not see all this twisting within the intellect. Faith and religion became diverse through intellect, How can one become a devotee at its door? It brings a hundred thousand proofs without metaphor, A world of doubt comes forth to meet it. In trembling, you are constantly bewildered, In hesitation, you are a seeker of the hidden thread. From the existence of intellect arose denials, And from the appearance of intellect were affirmations. If the intellect had any harmony at all, Why would the heart be yearning from head to toe? The intellect is perfect in knowing the Truth, But more perfect than it is the soul and heart. If the perfection of love is necessary for you, This veil is not opened for you except through the heart.' The seeker came before the renowned elder (Pir), And read to him a letter of unveiling from memory. The elder said to him, 'The intellect is the interpreter of Truth, It is the just judge of earth and heaven. Its command became penetrating in all beings, Its command is the key to difficulties. On the tree of intellect, whatever branch there is, The sun cannot reach its hand there. Whoever boasts of the intellect, Speaks from falsehood and exaggeration. Because whoever's intellect becomes pure, In his head remains neither falsehood nor exaggeration. How can a man become perfect through words and debate, In the station of his own intellect? It takes years for a person of good repute, To make the intellect perfect without any knot.'
