یکی پرسید ازان دانای فتوی
که چه بهتر بود از مال دنیی

چنین گفت او که مالی کان نباشد
که گر باشد به جز تاوان نباشد

که گر مالی ز دنیا افتد آغاز
ترا آن مال دارد از خدا باز

ولی کی ارزد آن مال جهانی
که از حق باز مانی تو زمانی

چو از حق باز می دارد ترا مال
پس آن بهتر که نبود در همه حال

ترا چون عیش دنیا راه زن شد
کجا در دین توانی بت شکن شد

همه عمرت شبست ای خفتهٔ راه
نه از روزی نه از بیداری آگاه

چو روزت صبح گرداند بزودی
که تو در عشق بازی با که بودی

هر آن ساعت که نه در عشق دینی
حریف اژدهای آتشینی

English translation

Someone asked that wise giver of decrees, 'What is better than the wealth of the world?' He thus replied, 'A wealth that does not exist, For if it does, it is nothing but a penalty. For if worldly wealth comes to you at the start, That wealth will hold you back from God. But how can any worldly wealth be worth That you should be kept from the Truth for even a moment? Since wealth holds you back from the Truth, Then it is better that it does not exist at all. When the pleasures of the world become your highway robber, How can you become an idol-breaker in faith? Your entire life is night, O sleeper on the path, Unaware of day and of wakefulness. When your day soon breaks into dawn, [you will see] With whom you were playing the game of love. Every hour that you are not in the love of religion, You are the companion of a fiery dragon.'
