چنین گفته ست آن پاکیزه ذاتی
که گر یابد کسی از حق وفاتی

از اول روز ماتم داریش تو
دوم روز و سوم همداریش تو

زماتم تا بهفتم می گدازی
چو هفتم بگذرد هشتم چه سازی

چو آخر روز باید بود تسلیم
چه می پیچی، در اول گیر تعلیم

همه تن گر شود چون مار پایت
گریزی نیست ممکن هیچ جایت

ندیدی وقت رفتن مار را هیچ
که در ره می رود پر تاب و پر پیچ

ولیکن چون بسوراخ آورد روی
درو کژی نماند یک سر موی

که تا ننهد ز سر آن پیچ پیچی
نیابد راه در سوراخ هیچی

تو هم کژی ز خود بفکن پس آنگاه
بسوراخت برد از راستی راه

چو در کوری تو پی گم کرده مانی
چو کوران از برون پرده مانی

نه بینی خلق را نه پای و نه سر
ز کوری زخم خورده مانده بر در

الف چون مستقیم آید به کوفی
چنان باید برأی العین صوفی

تصوف چیست، در صبر آرمیدن
طمع از جملهٔ عالم بریدن

توکل چیست، پی کردن زبان را
ز خود به خواستن خلق جهان را

فنا گشتن دل از جان برگرفتن
همه انداختن آن برگرفتن

English translation

Thus spoke that pure-natured soul: If anyone receives death from the Truth, On the first day of his mourning you are there, On the second and third days you remain with him. From the mourning till the seventh day you melt in grief; Once the seventh passes, what will you do on the eighth? Since on the last day one must surrender, Why do you twist and turn? Learn the lesson in the beginning. Even if your feet become like a snake's path, There is no escape possible for you anywhere. Have you never seen a snake when it departs, That it moves along the road full of twists and turns? But when it turns its face toward its hole, Not a hair's breadth of crookedness remains in it. Until it casts aside that coiling and twisting, It finds no path into the hole whatsoever. You too, cast off crookedness from yourself, and then The path of rectitude will lead you to your hole. As long as you remain lost in blindness, Like the blind, you remain outside the curtain. You see neither head nor foot of the creation, Wounded by blindness, you remain at the threshold. When the letter Alif stands straight in Kufic script, Thus it must appear to the direct vision of the Sufi. What is Sufism? Resting in patience, Severing all greed from the entire world. What is trust in God? Silencing the tongue, And preferring the creation of the world over oneself. What is annihilation? Relinquishing the heart from the soul, Casting everything aside, and taking up That.
