یکی پرسید از شبلی که در راه
که بودت بدرقه اول به درگاه ؟

سگی را گفت دیدم بر لب آب
که یک ذره نداشت از تشنگی تاب

چو دیدی روی خود در آب روشن
گمان بردی سگی دیگر معین

نخوردی آب از بیم دگر سگ
بجستی از لب آن آب در تگ

چو گشت از تشنگی دل بی قرار ش
ز اندازه برون شد انتظار ش

به آب افکند خود را ناگهانی
که تا شد آن سگ دیگر نهانی

چو او از پیش چشم خویش برخاست
خود او بود آن حجاب ، از پیش برخاست

چو برخاست این چنین روشن حسابم
یقینم شد که من خود را حجابم

ز خود فانی شدم ، کارم برآمد
سگی در راهم اول رهبر آمد

تو هم از راه چشم خویش برخیز
حجاب تو تویی از پیش برخیز

گرت مویی خودی برجای باشد
ترا بندی گران بر پای باشد

ترا آن به بدی ای مرد فرتوت
که از گهواره بردندی به تابوت

ازان موسی ز حق ان پایگه یافت
که از گهواره در تابوت ره یافت

حضور او اگر باید مدامت
میا با خود دگر این می نمامت

میا با خود بیا بی خود ز خود دور
که هست آن بی خودی نور علی نور

اگر تو بالغ اسرار گردی
ز یک یک عضو برخوردار گردی

نه طفی ماندت نه احولی نیز
ازو گویی وزو بینی همه چیز

English translation

Someone asked Shibli, "On the path, Who was your first escort to the court (of God)?" He said, "I saw a dog at the edge of the water, Who had no endurance left from thirst. When it saw its own face in the clear water, It imagined it was certainly another dog. It did not drink water out of fear of the other dog, It would jump away from the edge of that water. When its heart became restless from thirst, Its anticipation exceeded all bounds. Suddenly, it threw itself into the water, So that the other dog disappeared. When it vanished from its own eyes, It was itself the veil; (the veil) was lifted from before it. When my account thus became clear, I became certain that I am my own veil. I became annihilated from myself, my purpose was achieved; A dog became my first guide on the path. You too, rise from before your own eyes; Your veil is yourself, rise from before yourself. If even a hair of selfhood remains in its place, You will have a heavy shackle on your foot. It would have been better for you, O decrepit man, If they had carried you from the cradle to the coffin. Moses attained that station from God because He found his way from the cradle into the coffin (the ark). If you need His constant presence, Do not come with yourself anymore, this I tell you plainly. Do not come with yourself; come selfless, far from yourself, For that selflessness is light upon light. If you become mature in the mysteries, You will benefit from every single limb. Neither will blindness remain in you, nor squinting (seeing double); You will speak through Him and see everything through Him."
