(9) The Discourse of That Madman on a Prayer Not Worth a Loaf of Bread

Original content

English translation

A madman who walked the path of blame, They said to him: 'On the Day of Resurrection, There will be someone whose ten years of prayers Will be proclaimed by a herald far and wide. Yet no one will buy it from him even for a single round loaf of bread, Though the herald proclaims it repeatedly before the assembly.' The madman replied: 'That is because it is not worth it; All of his prayers are not worth a single loaf of bread. For if the people of the valley were to buy it, There would be no need for such a herald. If you have a hundred affairs in your worldly life, You remember none of them except during your prayer. Since your prayer is thus superficial and metaphorical, In reality, it is no prayer at all.'
