جواب پدر / The Father's Answer

پدر گفتش که ای مغرور مانده
ز اسرا رحقیقت دور مانده

مکن امروز ضایع زندگانی
چو میدانی که تو فردا نمانی

ببابل می روی ای مرد فرتوت
که سحر آموزی از هاروت و ماروت

هزاران سال شد کان دو فرشته
نگونسارند در چه تشنه گشته

وزیشان آنگهی تا آب آن چاه
مسافت یک وجب نیست ای عجب راه

چو نتوانند خود را آب دادن
کجا در می توانندت گشادن

چو استاد این چنین باشد پریشان
که خواهد کرد شاگردی ایشان

ترا امروز بینم دیو گشته
نخواهی گشت در فردا فرشته

مگرمرگت ببابل می دواند
که سرگردان و غافل می دواند

اگر مرگ تو در بابل نبودی
ترا این آرزو در دل نبودی

English translation

The father said to him, 'O you who remain proud, Far removed from the secrets of truth! Do not waste your life today, Since you know that you will not remain tomorrow. You are going to Babylon, O decrepit man, To learn magic from Harut and Marut? For thousands of years, those two angels Have been suspended upside down in the well, parched with thirst. And from them to the water of that well, The distance is not even a span—what a wondrous path! Since they cannot quench their own thirst, How can they open anything for you? When the teacher is in such disarray, Who would want to be their pupil? I see you today having become a demon; You will not become an angel tomorrow. Perhaps death is running you to Babylon, Running you bewildered and heedless. If your death were not in Babylon, You would not have had this desire in your heart.'
