یکی پرسید ازان مجنون غمگین
که از لیلی چه می گوئی تو مسکین

بخاک افتاد مجنون سر نگون سار
بدو گفتا بگو لیلی دگر بار

تو از من چند معنی جوی باشی
ترا این بس که لیلی گوی باشی

بسی گر در معنی سفته آید
چنان نبود که لیلی گفته آید

چو نام و نعت لیلی بازگفتی
جهانی در جهانی راز گفتی

چو دایم نام لیلی می توان گفت
ز غیری کفرم آید یک زمان گفت

کسی کو نام لیلی کردی آغاز
بر مجنون همی عاقل شدی باز

وگر جز نام لیلی یاد کردی
شدی دیوانه و فریاد کردی

اگر گم بودن خود یاد داری
روا باشد که از وی یاد آری

ولی تا از خودی سدیت پیشست
اگر یادش کنی آن یاد خویشست

English translation

One asked that sorrowful madman: 'What do you say of Layla, you poor soul?' Majnun fell headlong to the dust, And said to him: 'Say Layla once more!' 'How many meanings do you seek from me? It is enough for you to be a speaker of Layla's name. Even if many pearls of meaning are pierced, It would not be as when Layla is spoken. When you repeated the name and description of Layla, You spoke a world within a world of secrets. Since one can constantly speak the name of Layla, To speak of anyone else for a single moment is heresy to me.' Anyone who began with the name of Layla, Would become wise to Majnun once more; And if they recalled other than the name of Layla, He would become mad and cry out. If you remember your own nonexistence, It is permissible for you to remember her. But as long as a barrier of selfhood stands before you, If you remember her, that remembrance is of yourself.
