(14) The Speech of That Man on Backbiting

Original content

English translation

There was a great man of conversation, He had wandered much around the world. One said to him, 'O wise companion, Whom did you see of whom you would speak?' Thus he said, 'I traveled the seven climes, And saw in the world only one person and a half. One was he who remained in the background, Who spoke neither good nor evil of anyone. But the half was he who, out of honor, Never spoke anything but good of creation. As long as good and evil accompany you, Neither your heart will be seeing nor your soul aware. But when neither this nor that remains to you, Your soul is occupied with the secret of holiness.'
