مگر ابن المبارک بامدادی
بره می رفت برفی بود و بادی

غلامی دید یک پیراهن او را
که می لرزید از سرما تن او را

بدو گفتا چرا با خواجه این راز
نگوئی تا ترا جامه کند ساز

غلامک گفت من با خواجهٔ خویش
چه گویم چون مرا بیند کم و پیش

چو او می بیندم روشن چه گویم
چو او به داند از من من چه جویم

چو بشنید این سخن ابن المبارک
برآمد آتش از جانش بتارک

بزد یک نعره و بیهوش افتاد
چنان گویا کسی خاموش افتاد

زبان بگشاد چون با خویش آمد
که ما را رهبری در پیش آمد

الا ای راه بینان حقیقت
درآموزید ازین هندو طریقت

که می داند که در هر سینهٔ چیست
ز چندین خلق داغش بر دل کیست

دلی کز داغ او آگاه گردد
رهش در یک نفس کوتاه گردد

که هر دل را که از داغش نشانست
بیک دم پای کوبان جان فشانست

چنان کان حبشی ازداغش خبر یافت
بیک دم عمر ضایع کرده دریافت

English translation

One morning, Ibn al-Mubarak, Was walking on a road; there was snow and wind. He saw a slave wearing but a single shirt, Whose body was shivering from the cold. He asked him, 'Why don't you tell your master this secret, So that he might provide you with proper clothing?' The young slave replied, 'What can I say to my master, Since he already sees my condition, more or less? Since he sees me clearly, what should I say? Since he knows better than I, what should I seek?' When Ibn al-Mubarak heard these words, A fire flared from his soul to the crown of his head. He let out a cry and fell unconscious, Falling as if someone had gone entirely silent. When he came to his senses, he began to speak: 'A guide has appeared before us! O you who see the path of truth, Learn the spiritual way from this Indian slave. For He knows what is in every breast, And among so many people, upon whose heart His brand is set. A heart that becomes aware of His brand, Its journey is shortened in a single breath. For every heart that bears the mark of His brand, Joyously dances and sacrifices its soul in a single breath. Just as that Abyssinian became aware of His brand, And in a single breath recovered his wasted life.'
