(9) The Tale of Abu Bakr Sofaleh

Original content

English translation

Thus has Abu Bakr Sofaleh said, Who is ever the one referred to: They say, 'He has seated me in water, [Saying] "Never get wet, O you who are left behind!" For although you are drowned, you must be such That if you get wet, you are of the stained-skirted.' Do not get wet, though you are always in water; In this state, what does the lion of the forest weigh? Who knows how, in this grief of men, The brave ones are miserably rolling in blood. If this pain were to be acquired by you, A world of blood would fill your heart.
