(3) The Tale of Anushirvan the Just

Original content

English translation

Thus spoke Anushirvan the Just, That if you die from deadly poverty, That sword wound is better for you, Than being satiated by the bread of the base. Do not engage in strife with the people of the world, For it is but a carcass and a handful of tiny worms. The people of the world, entirely in hypocrisy, Are like worms in the midst of filth. Your gold and silver, public approval, and business affairs, Will not be of use to you in your final breath. If you have sincerity at that time, It will be of use, otherwise woe unto your soul. Whatever is considered perfection in this world, Know for certain that it is a detriment to religion.
