ایاز سیمبر در خواب خوش بود
دلش چون دیده یک ساعت بیاسود

ببالین آمدش محمود غازی
که بود اندر سر او سرفرازی

ز خواب خوش نکردش هیچ بیدار
هزارش بوسه زد بر هر دو رخسار

چو فارغ شد ز کار بوسه آن شاه
همی مالید پایش تا سحرگاه

بآخر چون زخواب خوش درآمد
ز شرم شاه چون آتش برآمد

چو شاهش دید گفت ای حسنت افزون
چو تو باز آمدی من رفتم اکنون

دران ساعت که تو بیخویش بودی
زهر وصفت که گویم بیش بودی

دران ساعت که دیدم جان فزایت
نبودی تو که من بودم بجایت

چو با خویش آمدی محبوب گم شد
چو تو طالب شدی مطلوب گم شد

مباش ای دوست تا محبوب باشی
که گر باشی بخود محجوب باشی

ز خود بگذر که بی خود جمله مائی
چو بیخود خوش تری با خود چرائی

چو معدومی همه موجود باشی
چو بر هیچی همه محمود باشی

همی تا با خودی از تو نگویند
ولی تا بیخودی جز تو نجویند

English translation

Ayaz of the silver breast was in a sweet sleep; His heart, like his eyes, rested for an hour. Mahmud the warrior came to his bedside, In whose head there was exaltation. He did not awaken him at all from his sweet sleep, But gave a thousand kisses to both his cheeks. When the king was finished with the task of kissing, He massaged his feet until the dawn. Finally, when he awoke from his sweet sleep, Out of shame before the king, he flared up like fire. When the king saw him, he said, 'O you of abounding beauty, Now that you have returned, I have departed. In that hour when you were without yourself, Whatever I could say of your qualities, you were even more. In that hour when I saw your soul-enhancing state, You were not there, for I was in your place. When you came back to yourself, the beloved was lost; When you became the seeker, the sought-one was lost. Do not exist, O friend, that you may be the beloved; For if you exist within yourself, you will be veiled. Pass beyond yourself, for without yourself you are entirely us; Since you are better off without yourself, why are you with yourself? When you are non-existent, you shall be entirely existent; When you are nothing, you shall be entirely Mahmud. As long as you are with yourself, they will not speak of you; But when you are without yourself, they will seek none but you.'
