(18) The Tale of Bahlool

Original content

English translation

A man was riding his steed in Baghdad, You would say in his claim, he was the bestower of the world. Many commanders marched before and behind him, The path grew narrow for the people because of him. From every side, there was the shout of 'Make way!', For his cries of 'Move aside!' came from all directions. It happened that Bahlool picked up a handful of dust, He went and kept that secret before his sight, [Saying], 'Such immense arrogance from a creature of dust is not fitting, For even if the master has become a Pharaoh, he is not God. Go on in this manner, down to the people of the bazaar, All have set their traps to catch a corpse. When a person's object of desire is a corpse, How can he have any business with the secret of holiness?'
