(10) The Tale of Bayazid and His Tying of the Zunnar

Original content

English translation

When that elder of Bastam fell into his death throes, He said to his companions, 'O people of good intentions, Bring me a zunnar right now, So that this wretched madman may tie it on.' A clamor arose from among the people, Saying, 'This matter of the zunnar is not right for you. How could it be, O Sultan of Secrets, That Bayazid's waist should then have a zunnar?' Once again he asked his companions for a zunnar, No one could bear to do that deed. Finally, the Sheikh pleaded exceedingly, No one knew the remedy for that situation. They all said, 'If destiny has willed Misery for the Sheikh, what can be done about it?' The companions brought a zunnar, Which he tied on, and then water opened from his two eyes. Then he rubbed his face in the dust, And wailed with the burning of his soul and the pain of his heart. He shed much blood from his blood-raining eyes, And after that, he cut the zunnar from his waist. He opened his tongue, saying, 'O Absolute Sustainer, By the truth that You are the eternal Truth, Since at this moment I have cut the cord of the zunnar, Consider me that same seventy-year-old infidel. Is not an infidel who at this moment returns, By a single grace of Yours, made a possessor of secrets? I am that infidel who has returned at this moment, What if I came late? I have still returned.' He said this and renewed his testimony of faith, He wept boundlessly and lamented exceedingly. 'Although I have traveled a long way, Consider it as though I have just arrived. Since You know that I am nothing, O God, Why do You want all this from a nothing? What do I have? I have boundless pain; From wealth and property, I have a fresh heart. Since I have a ruined and roasted heart, Why do You want a tribute from a ruin? If You want helplessness, there is plenty; I do not know if anyone is as helpless as me. No one but You knows my sorrow, You know it, even if no one else knows. What am I saying, since I know You are watching? What am I seeking, since I know You are present? You Yourself will give, whether I seek or not, You Yourself know, whether I speak or not. We are all headless bodies fallen into bonds, What can arise from these few headless bodies? Since Your creation brings You neither profit nor loss, All mercy is for the sinners.'
