شبی در خواب دید آن مرد بیدار
که ناگه بایزید آمد پدیدار

بدو گفتا که ای شیخ زمانه
چه گفتی با خداوند یگانه

چنین گفت او که امر آمد ز درگاه
که ای سالک چه آوردیم از راه

بحق گفتم که آوردم گناهت
ولی شرکت نیاوردم ز راهت

بدنیا خورده بودم شربتی شیر
شبم درد شکم آمد گلوگیر

چو آن شب درد را آهنگ جان خاست
بدل گفتم چو خوردم شیر ازان خاست

حقم گفتا که می گوئی که از راه
ترا شرکی نیاوردم بدرگاه

بدین زودی فراموشت شد ای پیر
که آوردی نو شرک آخر دران شیر

چو تو از شرک درد از شیر دیدی
خطی در دفتر وحدت کشیدی

مکن دعوی وحدت آشکاره
که تو از شرک هستی شیرخواره

کجا بوید گل توحید جانت
که بوی شرک آید از دهانت

تو وقتی در حقیقت بالغ آئی
که پاک از شیر خوردن فارغ آئی

English translation

One night, that awakened man saw in a dream That suddenly Bayazid appeared. He said to him, 'O Sheikh of the age, What did you say to the Unique God?' He replied thus: 'A command came from the Divine Court: "O seeker, what have you brought Us from the path?" I said in truth, "I have brought You my sins, But I have not brought polytheism from Your path." In the world, I had once drunk a draught of milk; At night, a stomachache seized my throat. When that night the pain rose to attack my soul, I said in my heart, "Since I drank milk, it arose from that." My God said to me: "You say that from the path, I have not brought You any polytheism to the Court. Have you forgotten so quickly, O old man? For you ultimately brought forth new polytheism in that milk. Since through polytheism you saw the pain coming from the milk, You drew a line in the book of unity. Do not make claims of unity so openly, For in polytheism, you are but a suckling infant. How can your soul smell the flower of monotheism, When the smell of polytheism comes from your mouth? You will only truly come of age in reality, When you become completely free from drinking milk."'
