برای بایزید آمد ز جائی
غریبی، در بزد چون آشنائی

میان خانه در شیخ نکورای
بفکرت ایستاده بوده بر پای

بدو گفتا نگوئی کز کجا ام؟
غریبش گفت مردی آشناام

غریبم آمده بهر لقائی
ببوی بایزید از دور جائی

جوابش داد شیخ عالم افروز
که ای درویش سی سالست امروز

که من در آرزوی بایزیدم
بسی جستم ولی گردش ندیدم

ندانم تا چه افتاد و کجا شد
نمی بینم مگر از چشم ما شد

چنان در زر وجودش گشت خاموش
که می شد قرب سی سالش فراموش

کسی کو جاودانه محو زر شد
ز خود هرگز نداند با خبر شد

ولیکن کیمیا آنست مادام
که نور الله نهندش سالکان نام

اگر بر کافری تابد زمانی
فرو گیرد ز نور او جهانی

چو زد بر سحرهٔ فرعون آن نور
چنان نزدیک گشتند آن چنان دور

اگر بر پیرزن تابد زمانی
کند چون رابعه ش مرد جهانی

وگر بر بیل زن تابد باعزاز
چو خرقانیش گرداند سرافراز

وگر یک ذره با معروف گردد
ز ترسائی بدین موصوف گردد

وگر پیش فضیل آید پدیدار
شود از ره زنی ره دان اسرار

وگر درجان ابن ادهم آید
دلش سلطان هر دو عالم آید

وگر بر تن زند دل گردد آن خاک
وگر بر دل زند جانی شود پاک

چو جان در خویشتن آن نور یابد
دو گیتی را ز هستی دور یابد

چو جان زان نور گردد محو مطلق
به سبحانی برون آید و اناالحق

چو در صحن بهشت آید باخلاص
خطابش این بود از حضرت خاص

که هست این نامه از شاه یگانه
به سوی پادشاه جاودانه

چو از خاص خودش پوشند جامه
ز قدوسی بقدوسیست نامه

چو قدوسی توانی جاودان گشت
همه تن دل همه دل نیز جان گشت

چو دادت صورة خوب و صفت هم
بیا تا بدهدت این معرفت هم

English translation

For Bayazid there came from a certain place A stranger, who knocked on the door like a friend. Inside the house, the wise Sheikh Was standing on his feet immersed in thought. He said to him, 'Will you not tell me where I am from?' The stranger replied, 'I am a familiar man. I am a stranger who has come for a meeting, Seeking the scent of Bayazid from a distant place.' The world-illuminating Sheikh answered him, Saying, 'O dervish, it has been thirty years today That I have been in desire of Bayazid; I have searched much but have not found his trace. I know not what occurred or where he went, I see him not, perhaps he is lost from our eyes.' He became so extinguished in his golden existence That nearly thirty years of his were forgotten. One who is eternally effaced in gold Never knows if he is aware of himself. But the alchemy is always that Which the spiritual travelers name the Light of Allah. If it shines upon an infidel for a moment, A whole world is enveloped by his light. When that light struck the magicians of Pharaoh, They became so close from so far. If it shines upon an old woman for a moment, It makes her the man of the world like Rabia. And if it shines upon a tiller of the soil with honor, It makes him exalted like Kharaqani. And if a single mote of it aligns with Ma'ruf, From Christianity he becomes endowed with this faith. And if it appears before Fudayl, From a highwayman he becomes the guide of the path's secrets. And if it enters the soul of Ibn Adham, His heart becomes the sovereign of both worlds. And if it strikes the body, that dust becomes a heart, And if it strikes the heart, it becomes a pure soul. When the soul finds that light within itself, It finds both worlds far from existence. When the soul becomes absolutely effaced by that light, It bursts forth with 'Subhani' and 'Ana'l-Haqq'. When it enters the courtyard of Paradise with sincerity, This will be its address from the Supreme Presence: That this letter is from the Unique King Unto the Eternal King. When they are clothed in the garment of His chosen, The letter is from a Holy One to a Holy One. When you can become a holy one eternally, The whole body becomes a heart, and all heart becomes a soul. Since He gave you a fair form and attribute as well, Come, so that He may give you this gnosis as well.
