(14) The Tale of Bishr Hafi Who Perfumed the Name of the Exalted Truth with Musk

Original content

English translation

Early one day, Bishr Hafi was walking, Intoxicated from dregs, yet his soul was pure. By chance, he found a piece of paper on the path; On that paper was written the name of Allah. From the world, he had earned nothing but a barleycorn; He gave it and bought musk—what a profit he made! At night, that truth-seeking man Perfumed the name of the Truth with his musk and made it fragrant. That night, near dawn, he saw a dream In which he was addressed: 'O you who lifted My name from the dust, And with reverence made it both fragrant and pure! We have made you a seeker of Truth; We have made you both pure and fragrant.' O God, how much has this sweet-speaking Attar Perfumed Your name with the fragrance of poetry! What does it matter if Attar is sweet-spoken? For Your name has eternally been fragrant! By Your grace, make him the dust of that door; By Your own name, make him renowned! For he has no face to show save by Your grace, Even if he has not a hair's breadth of obedience.
