(10) The Tale of Fire and the Burnt One

Original content

English translation

When stone and iron set to work, From both, a fire became manifest. There entered the burnt tinder which lived by burning; The fire opened its mouth and said: 'Lo, who is this?' The burnt tinder answered it there: 'I am an acquaintance, O companionable friend.' Then the fire said: 'My work is illumination; You are darkness, what acquaintance do you have?' The burnt tinder answered it sweetly at that moment: 'From whom am I dark, if not from the fire? You burnt me in the light; Now you say you have no acquaintance? Since I am miserably burnt by you like this, Through grace, preserve your own burnt one.' When the fire recognized the helplessness of the burnt one, It withdrew its hand from the world with it. If you too kindle from this grief, Since you burned here, you will not burn there. For though the baked brick was born of the earth, Yet it is a brick born of fire. Since a baked brick is a fiery brick, It is not fitting for the grave of one who is of the faith. Since your Sharia does not permit even this much, It will never hold you to the fire. If a lamp comes to the eye of the garden, It instantly makes the jasmine wither. A lamp that is precious at the door of the Truth, Its example is like the lamp of the jasmine. Although life was spent in hardship, Who is more delicate and helpless than us? If a rose petal falls upon us, You will see no one more destitute than us.
