(۱۲) حکایت حلّاج با پسر / (12) The Tale of Hallaj with His Son

پسر را گفت حلاج نکوکار
بچیزی نفس را مشغول میدار

وگرنه او ترا معزول دارد
بصد ناکردنی مشغول دارد

که تو در ره نهٔ مرد قوی ذات
که تنها دم توانی زد بمیقات

تو را تا نفس می ماند خیالی
بود در مولشش دایم کمالی

اگر این سگ زمانی سیر گردد
عجب اینست کاینجا شیر گردد

شکم چون سیر گردد یک زمانش
به غیبت گرسنه گردد زبانش

چو تیغی تیز بگشاید زبانی
بغیبت می کشد خلق جهانی

بسی گرچه فرو گوئی بگوشش
نیاری کرد یک ساعت خموشش

English translation

The righteous Hallaj said to his son: Keep the lower self busy with something, Otherwise, it will dismiss you, And keep you busy with a hundred forbidden deeds. For you are not a traveler of strong essence on the path Who can breathe alone at the appointed station of meeting. As long as the fantasy of the self remains within you, There will always be constant wavering in its search for perfection. If this dog is sated for a moment, The wonder is that it becomes a lion here. As soon as its belly is filled for a moment, Its tongue becomes hungry for backbiting. Like a sharp sword, it opens a tongue, And slays a world of people with backbiting. Though you whisper much into its ear, You cannot keep it quiet for a single hour.
