چو ببریدند ناگه بر سر دار
سر دو دست حلاج آن چنان زار

بدان خونی که از دستش بپالود
همه روی و همه ساعد بیالود

پس او گفت آنکه سر عشق بشناخت
نمازش را بخون باید وضو ساخت

بدو گفتند ای شوریده ایام
چراکردی بخون آلوده اندام

که گر از خون وضوی آن بسازی
بود عین نمازت نانمازی

چو مردان پای نه در کوی معشوق
مترس از نام و ننگ هیچ مخلوق

که هر دل کو بقیومست قایم
نترسد ذرهٔ از لؤم لایم

بیا مردانه در کار خدا باش
کم اغیار گیر و کار را باش

چو گردون گرد عالم چند گردی
ز خود کامی فراتر شو بمردی

که گر عشقت چنین نامرد گیرد
ز خجلت بند بندت درد گیرد

بسا شیران که صاحب زور بودند
بزور عشق در چون مور بودند

تو کز موری کمی در زور و مقدار
به پیش عشق چون آئی پدیدار؟

English translation

When they suddenly cut off on the gallows both hands of Hallaj so miserably, With the blood that trickled from his hands he smeared all his face and all his forearms. Then he said: 'He who has known the secret of love must perform the ablution for his prayer with blood.' They said to him: 'O distracted one of the times, why did you stain your limbs with blood? For if you perform your ablution with blood, your very prayer will be invalid.' Like men, step into the lane of the Beloved; fear not the reputation or shame of any creature. For every heart that is sustained by the Self-Subsistent does not fear in the least the blame of any blamer. Come manfully, engage in the work of God; pay little heed to others and attend to the Work. Like the heavens, how long will you revolve around the world? Rise above self-will through manliness. For if love finds you so unmanly, every joint of yours will ache with shame. Many lions who possessed great strength were like ants before the power of love. You, who are less than an ant in strength and worth, how can you show yourself before love?
