نشسته بود ابراهیم ادهم
پس و پیشش غلامان دست بر هم

یکی تاج مرصع بر سر او
بغلطاقی مغرق در بر او

درآمد خضر بی فرمان در ایوان
بصورة چون یکی مرد شتربان

غلامان را ز بیمش دم فرو شد
کسی کو را بدید از هم فرو شد

چو ابرهیم او را دید ناگاه
بدو گفتا که دادت ای گدا راه؟

خضر گفتا که نبود جایم اینجا؟
رباطیست این، فرو می آیم اینجا

زبان بگشاد ابراهیم ادهم
که هست این قصر سلطان معظم

رباطش از چه می خوانی تو غافل
مگر دیوانهٔ ای مرد عاقل

زبان بگشاد خضر و گفت ای شاه
کرا بودست اول این وطنگاه

چنین گفت او که اول راه اینجا
فلانی بود دایم شاه اینجا

ز بعد او فلانی پس فلانی
کنون اینجا منم شاه جهانی

خضر گفتش که گر شه را خبر نیست
رباط اینست و بس، چیزی دگر نیست

چو می آیند و می گذرند پیوست
نشستن در رباطی چون دهد دست؟

چو پیش از تو بسی شاهان گذشتند
نکو خواهان و بد خواهان گذشتند

ترا هم نیز جان خواهان درآیند
وزین کهنه رباطت در ربایند

درین کهنه رباط آسودنت چیست
نه زینجائی تو، اینجا بودنت چیست

چو ابراهیم این بشنید در گشت
چو گوئی زین سخن زیر و زبر گشت

روان شد خضر و او از پی دوان شد
ز دام خضر بیرون کی توان شد

بسی سوگند دادش کای جوانمرد
قبولم کن کنون گر می توان کرد

چو تخمی در دلم کشتی نهانی
کنون آبی بده ای زندگانی

بگفت این وز قفای او روان شد
که تا مردی ز مردان جهان شد

رباط کهنهٔ دنیا برانداخت
جهانداری بدرویشی درانداخت

بزرگانی که سر فقر دیدند
بملک نقد درویشی خریدند

ز نقش پادشائی باز رستند
بمعنی از گدائی باز رستند

که گرچه ملک دنیی پادشائیست
ولی چون بنگری اصلش گدائیست

English translation

Ibrahim Adham was seated, His servants before and behind him with hands folded. A jeweled crown was upon his head, Wearing a lavishly embroidered garment upon his breast. Khidr entered the palace without permission, In the appearance of a camel driver. The servants' breath was caught in fear of him, Whoever saw him was completely unnerved. When Ibrahim suddenly saw him, He asked him, 'Who gave you entry, O beggar?' Khidr replied, 'Is this not a place for me? This is a caravansarai; I am stopping here.' Ibrahim Adham opened his mouth and said, 'This is the palace of the exalted Sultan! Why do you foolishly call it a caravansarai? Are you mad, O seemingly wise man?' Khidr spoke and said, 'O King! To whom did this homeland belong first?' He said thus, 'First of all, right here, So-and-so was always the king.' 'After him, so-and-so, then so-and-so, Now I am the king of the world here.' Khidr said to him, 'If the king is unaware, This is a caravansarai and nothing else! Since they continuously come and pass on, How is it possible to sit permanently in a caravansarai? Since many kings have passed before you, Well-wishers and ill-wishers have passed on, Those seeking your soul will also enter, And snatch you away from this old caravansarai. What is your resting in this old caravansarai? You are not from here; what is your existence here?' When Ibrahim heard this, he was transformed; By these words, he was turned completely upside down. Khidr set off, and he ran after him; How could one escape from the snare of Khidr? He made him swear many oaths, saying, 'O noble man! Accept me now, if it can be done. Since you have secretly sown a seed in my heart, Now give it water, O essence of life!' He said this and hurried after him, Until he became one of the great spiritual men of the world. He cast away the old caravansarai of the world, He threw away kingship for dervishhood. The great ones who saw the secret of poverty, Purchased dervishhood with the cash of the kingdom. They escaped from the illusion of kingship, In reality, they escaped from beggary. For although worldly kingdom is kingship, When you look closely, its true essence is beggary.
