(12) The Tale of Ibrahim Adham

Original content

English translation

By chance, Ibrahim Adham was walking On a path, he saw two people together One wanted something for a barley grain from the other For a barley grain, his affair was not going right Again he said, "Take a barley grain from me For there is a way out of this matter from me." Then that one said, "I will not accept it from you For a barley grain I won't give this, I won't give this." (in bedaham) When Ibrahim heard this immediately Like a bird he fluttered his wings out of terror At times he lost consciousness, at times he came to One of the spiritual men approached him He asked him, "O Sultan of Religion! What has happened to you that you have fallen thus?" He said, "When he said 'I won't give this' (in bedaham), In my heart I thought he said 'Ibn Adham'. He began with 'For a barley grain I won't give this', The voice came as 'For a barley grain this Adham'. If every atom is constantly crying out, A wakeful heart listens to it. Suppose you haven't seen the state of the spiritual men, You have at least heard their good words. If you desire the perfection of the state of men, Annihilate yourself in the words and speech of men. Do not exist, O atom, if you want eternally Your position to be held by the sun's disk. If your existence were not achieved, This place would not be your dwelling. For every child who died in infancy, Easily traversed the path of these four things. So all this is before you because of that, Your day and night are an affliction to yourself because of that. But if you want the cup so that you may know, Die to yourself during your lifetime. I have heard of the Cup of Jamshid, O sensible man, Which was greatly world-revealing in the universe. Know that that Cup of Jamshid is the intellect, O friend, Which is your kernel, and your senses are like the shell. Every atom that exists in both worlds, Is entirely evident in the cup of your intellect. Thousands of crafts, secrets, and definitions, Thousands of commands, prohibitions, rulings, and duties, Are based on your intellect, and this is complete; What cup could ever be brighter than this for you?"
