ز عیسی آن یکی درخواست یک روز
که نام مهتر حقم درآموز

مسیحش گفت تو این را نشائی
چه خواهی آنچه با آن برنیائی

بسی آن مرد سوگندانش برداد
که می باید ازین نامم خبر داد

چو نام مهترش آخر در آموخت
دلش چون شمع ازان شادی برافروخت

مگر آن مرد روزی در بیابان
گذر می کرد چون بادی شتابان

میان ره گوی پر استخوان دید
تفکر کرد و آنجا روی آن دید

که ازنام مهین جوید نشانی
کند از کهترین وجه امتحانی

بدان نام از خدای خویش درخواست
که تا زنده کند آن استخوان راست

چو گفت آن نام حالی استخوان زود
بهم پیوست و پیدا کرد جان زود

پدید آمد یکی شیر از میانه
که آتش می زد از چشمش زبانه

بزد یک پنچه و آن مرد را کشت
شکست از پنجهٔ او مرد را پشت

بخورد آنگه بزاری در زمانش
میان ره رها کرد استخوانش

هم آنجا کاستخوان شیر نر بود
شد آن گو ز استخوان مرد پر زود

چو بشنید این سخن عیسی بر آشفت
زبان بگشاد با یاران چنین گفت

که آنچ آنرا کسی نبود سزاوار
ز حق خواهد نباشد حق روادار

ز حق نتوان همه چیز نکو خواست
که جز بر قدر خود نتوان ازو خواست

تو گر شایستگی باخویش داری
هر آن چیزی که خواهی بیش داری

چه گر کار تو زاری و دعا است
ولیکن کار او محض عطا است

چه علت در میان آری پدیدار
که خود بخشد اگر باشد خریدار

English translation

One day, a man asked Jesus: "Teach me the Greatest Name of the Lord." The Messiah said to him: "You are not worthy of this. Why do you desire that which you cannot cope with?" The man swore many oaths to him, Insisting that he must be told of this Name. When Jesus finally taught him the Greatest Name, His heart lit up with joy like a candle. One day, as that man was passing through the desert, Hastening like a swift wind, He saw a pit full of bones along the path. He pondered and saw an opportunity there To seek a sign of the Greatest Name, And test it in the humblest manner. With that Name, he petitioned his Lord To bring those bones back to life. No sooner had he spoken the Name than the bones Joined together and quickly came to life. A lion emerged from the middle, Flashing fire from its eyes. It struck with a paw and killed the man, Breaking his back with its blow. It then devoured him miserably right there, Leaving his bones on the road. Right where the bones of the male lion had been, That pit was soon filled with the bones of the man. When Jesus heard of this, he was troubled, And speaking to his companions, he said: "If someone asks the Lord for what they are not worthy of, God will not favor them with it. One cannot ask for every good thing from God, Except in proportion to one's own capacity. If you possess the worthiness within yourself, You will have in abundance whatever you desire. For though your part is weeping and prayer, His part is pure bestowal. Why bring up any pretext, For He Himself bestows if there is a seeker."
