(6) The Tale of Jirjis, Peace Be Upon Him
Original content
English translation
Three times that infidel, amidst fire and blood, Turned the wheel upon Jirjis. His body was shattered atom by atom like dust, From his dust sprang a field of tulips. Amidst all this pain and his torment, A call reached him from the Herald of Glory: 'Whoever boasts of friendship with Us, Will not drink pure wine without pain. This is the perpetual reward of friends, That the wheel passes over their seven limbs.' They said to him, 'O Jirjis, and O pure one, Do you have any desire on this earth?' He said, 'My desire now is this, That once again beneath the wheel, They tear me to pieces in a torment, So that once more a call may come to me: "He etched so much suffering upon his soul, Because he stepped into Our friendship." You do not know the value of His friends, For you are an ignorant man in life. Be one who breathes of friendship, Or if not, be a friend of the friends.'
