مگر محمود می شد با سپاهی
رسیدش پیش درویشی براهی

سلامی کرد شاه او را دران دشت
علیکی گفت آن درویش و بگذشت

بلشکر گفت شاه پاک عنصر
که بینید آن گدا با آن تکبر

بدو درویش گفت ار هوشمندی
گدا خود چون توئی بر من چه بندی

که در صد شهر وده افزون رسیدم
بهر مسجد گدائی تودیدم

چو جوجو نیم جو بر هر سرائی
نوشتند از پی چون تو گدائی

ندیدم هیچ بازار و دکانی
که از ظلمت نبود آنجا فغانی

کنون گر بینش چشمت تمامست
ز ما هر دو گدا بنگر کدامست

English translation

It happened that Mahmud was traveling with an army, He came upon a dervish on the road. The king greeted him in that plain, The dervish replied with a greeting and passed by. The pure-natured king said to his army, 'Look at that beggar with such arrogance!' The dervish said to him, 'If you are wise, The beggar is yourself, why do you accuse me? For I have arrived in more than a hundred cities and villages, In every mosque I saw a beggar like you. For grain by grain, half a grain on every house, They have written for a beggar like you. I have not seen any market or shop, Where there was no outcry from your oppression. Now if your eyesight is complete, Look and see which of us two is the beggar!'
