(11) The Tale of Majnun and Layla

Original content

English translation

It happened one day that Majnun found an opportunity, He found permission to sit with Layla. Layla made a request of Majnun, Saying, 'O lover, bring forth what you have.' Majnun spoke and said, 'O Moon, In your love, neither water nor well has remained for me. I do not have even a drop of water in my liver, Nor do I have sleep in my eyes on any night. Since your love has plundered the currency of reason, Now there is only a soul, and a single sign from you (is enough). If you want my soul, here I give it, Know for certain that I give it without a doubt.' The bold Layla opened her mouth and said, 'How could I buy this from you? Bring something else!' Majnun gave a needle to Layla, saying, 'From the two worlds, this is all I have right now. For me, in the entire realm of existence, This is my only possession, and otherwise, destitute poverty. I kept this for this reason as well, That I would often fall in the desert. Often, in search of a sweetheart like you, Thorns would break in my foot like a rose. With this needle, fallen on the ground, I would extract those thorns from my foot.' Layla then said to Majnun, 'This is what I have been seeking from you all along! If you had been true in love, How could you be worthy of this needle? If, in seeking an idol like me, A thorn enters your foot, O frenzied one, It is not proper to pull it out with a needle, And if you do pull it out, well, that is not fidelity. A thorn that possesses so much perfection, That it is always the herald of the path of union, It is a pity to pull it out with a needle! It is a pity for you to consume anything but the blood of your heart! Since a thorn went into your foot for our sake, Consider it a rose that is worn on your garment. Are you lesser than a rosebush in this endeavor, Which endures thorns for a year in hope of the rose? A broken thorn in your foot from Layla, Is better than a hundred tied bouquets of roses from another.'
